Artwork: Bird Friends

Endearing images of native birds

This is a series of images based on my own observations of native NZ birds, drawn in a robust cartoonish style that conveys their character at a small, portable size.

Birds are a great subject to work on; they have a combination of innate beauty and a certain goofiness that I find very relatable. The key is to strike a balance between these characteristics. The kererū design, for example, required half-a-dozen redraws at the sketch stage before I was satisfied with the exact, ideal level of roundness.

I've used these designs for a number of items: brooches, pendants, stickers, earrings, as well as art prints. In their various forms, they make good companions.
